Tidying Together: From Pushback to Playful
A story and activity pages from two connection-first creators
Do you fall into this category? Like many parents I’ve worked with, the challenge of organizing together isn’t just the mess itself, it’s the resistance that comes with it.
Without addressing the root of that resistance, cooperation doesn’t just stall, the situation can easily escalate into a power struggle.
And perhaps that’s where you’ve been, choosing to do the work yourself to avoid further friction.
That’s why I wanted to share Debbie’s story, Sissy the Cat and the Wiggle-Wiggle Tidy. Through characters and a storyline that children can find relatable, Debbie brings this challenge to life.
We follow Sissy, whose resistance to clean up is a common one: it means having fun playing is over. But Mama knows, and turns the process into another game they can “play” together, with a little music and a lot of laughs.
This approach speaks to the heart of the Dooley Method: when taking care of the home feels daunting, bringing lightness and presence into that moment, connection through play, can turn things around.
After the story, I’ve also included a set of free kids’ activity pages to keep that spirit going, helping children make the connection between their belongings and where they return to after use. The more that association is built with warmth rather than pressure, the more children want to be part of it.
I hope this collaboration with Debbie has given you more confidence inviting your children to care for your home as a team.
Joyfully,
Ann
Sissy the Cat and the Wiggle-Wiggle Tidy
By Debbie Giannioti
Sissy the Cat was playing in her room.
She jumped from the bed to the floor.
She spun with her stuffed tiger.
She rolled a ball across the room and chased it.
Toys were everywhere.
Sissy laughed and leapt again.
Mama Cat stepped into the room.
“It’s almost time to get ready for bed,” Mama Cat said.
“Let’s do a quick tidy.”
Sissy flopped onto the bed and buried her face in the blanket.
“I don’t want to,” she said.
Mama Cat smiled.
“I have an idea,” Mama said.
“Let’s do the wiggle-wiggle tidy.”
Mama Cat clapped her paws.
She put on Sissy’s favorite song.
Clap. Clap.
Mama Cat swayed side to side.
She hummed a silly tune.
She wiggled her tail.
Sissy peeked up.
She giggled.
Then she jumped off the bed.
Mama Cat tossed one toy into a basket.
Swoop!
Sissy hopped and threw a toy in too.
Plop!
Mama Cat danced across the room with another toy.
Sissy followed her.
Mama danced to the shelf.
Sissy danced to the bed.
They moved fast.
They moved slow.
They stopped.
Then they wiggled again.
Mama Cat laughed.
“One more!”
Sissy grabbed a toy and ran.
Mama Cat cheered.
“Last dance!” Mama Cat said.
Then Mama Cat clapped once.
They slowed their feet.
The music softened.
Mama took a long breath in…
and let it out slowly.
Sissy felt her own breath slow too.
They looked around the room.
The floor was clearer.
The bed was free.
Not everything was perfect.
And that was okay.
Mama Cat and Sissy picked up a few more toys together, nice and easy.
The room felt calm again.
Then Sissy climbed onto the bed.
Her breathing was still a little fast…
but her body felt loose and warm.
Mama Cat sat beside her and pulled a book close.
Sissy leaned into her.
Mama Cat read in a soft, steady voice.
Sissy snuggled under the blanket.
The toys were resting in their places.
Everything felt ready for sleep.
Feathernest Woods was settling for the night.
The room was quiet and still.
And Sissy rested too.
The End.
